Selous Photo Safari (Chimpanzee Tracking offered as an extension to this safari) 10 - 16 January 2012
What better way to start the year than by spending a week on an African wildlife photography safari in Africa’s largest and wildest game reserve. Yes, of course we are talking about the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania! Roughly the size of Switzerland and in excess of 45 000 square kilometers, the Selous is as wild as it gets, and it’s also a photographer's paradise...

For this photo safari in Tanzania we will be based in a luxury safari camp (www.sandrivers.com) on East Africa’s largest river, the wonderfully wild Rufiji River. Here you will be woken by fish eagles every morning and lulled asleep to the sound of chomping hippos as they graze past your bungalow.
Photography on this safari of a lifetime takes on many dynamic forms including going out on a motorized boat as we explore the upper reaches of one of Africa's wildest rivers! We will forge our way upstream photographing the many wonderful waterbirds that call the Rufiji River home (including the delightful little Malachite Kingfisher). We will stop for a picnic in Stiegler's Gorge and you will feel like David Livingstone! When not on the river, we will be photographing from our exclusively booked 4-seater Land Rover safari trucks (complete with fridges in the back). Selous is one of the best places in Africa to photograph the endangered African Wild Dog and during this time of year, the Selous simply offers it all. It is all things to all photographers!:
Those photographers interested in macro opportunities, can enjoy fabulous bush walks as the bush is bursting with life this time of year. You can end your walk with a dip in the hot springs, that have been frequented by some of Africa's greatest explorers in centuries past. Bird photographers will enjoy photographing different and rare species as you wind your way along a narrow bush track through the rich riparian vegetation that lines East Africa's largest river. Palmnut Vultures, Bohms Bee-eaters and the strikingly beautiful Northern Carmine Bee-eaters are all on offer. The African Pitta breeds here this time of year but sightings of this, one of Africa's rarest birds, can never be guaranteed. Wild Dogs, Lions, Leopards and a wide array of mammal species are all on offer but in a setting that is as wild as it gets. There are hardly any other vehicles and the wilderness feels vast and endless, because it is! Your images shot in the Selous will have an edge to them! This is one of Africa's last remaining wildernesses.
For those of you that are up for an adventure, Sand Rivers safari camp offers one of the best fly camping experiences in all of Africa. We will camp out on the banks of a wild lake in the heart of the wilderness and sleeping under a mosquito net, you will gaze at the stars and listen to a cacophony of night sounds. This experience is not to be missed as the thrill of hearing a lion roar in the dark African night as you lie beneath a heaven of twinkling stars, just cannot be compared to anything else! There are also excellent opportunities to shoot star trails with a waxing crescent moon during this excursion! You will also enjoy excellent bird photography along the lake's edge in the early morning, so bring your tripod. We will have an armed guard to keep the 'big and hairies' at bay and you will still enjoy the same fine cuisine that you would in camp. This ultimate safari experience ranks right up there with Africa's finest as it allows you to experience the true 'Karen Blixen Africa'. We guarantee that it will be a highlight of your safari and indeed of your life.

More about the Sand River Safari Camp:
Sand Rivers is both an expedition base and safari retreat. It's still one of the smallest camps in the Selous and is situated deep in the wilderness. Although remote and wild, the lodge is big on comfort, style and safari adventure. Set right on the banks of the Rufiji River, the setting is nothing short of spectacular!
Sand Rivers Selous has just 5 stone and thatched cottages, all are open-fronted and raised on decks overlooking the river. These 5 Riverside rooms are with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers. The main lounge and dinning area are spacious and open-fronted. There's a chill-out area near the library and then acres of dining spots - around a main pool. Sit around the bar at the end of the day, the drinks are cold, and there's always good stories to be told in this wild corner of Africa. This is one of East Africa's best safari camps! Sand Rivers offers a rustic elegance with a spirit of comfort, freedom adventure that is hard to match.
